System Requirements
Ubuntu has grown a bit heavier in recent dats. Minimum system requirements include
2 GHz dual core processer
4 GB of RAM
25 GB of storage space
However, always put some additional RAM and storage space if you are installing Ubuntu 24.10 in a VirtualBox.
Ok, enough of talking now. Lets see how you can install Ubuntu 24.10 in a Virtual Box.
Install Ubuntu 24.10 in VirtualBox
I hope you are having VirtualBox installed. Click on New on the menu panel to get the Create Virtual Machine options. Enter VM name, Folder where you want to keep that VM (and it’s related files) and choose the ISO image you had downloaded.
Clicking on Next gives you a Unattended Guest OS Install Setup. Enter username, Password and Hostname. This is only for the guest session and we would be installing Ubuntu with it’s own credentials.
Select the memory and processors you want to assign to your VM. If you have enough RAM, go to at least 8 GB of RAM to make sure it runs smoothly. I had chosen about 8 GB of RAM, and 2 processors.
The next screen is about storage. You would have to create a Virtual Hard Disk, assign some size to it – do at least 40GB because this would be used to install Ubuntu, for updates and any applications you will install in your VM.
Next screen gives a summary. Go through it, make some changes if you want to and click on Finish. This will create a Virtual Machine for your Ubuntu 24.10.
So far, we have created a Virtual Machine. We have assigned some disk space, memory, processor, and gave it the path for ISO. Next steps would be install Ubuntu from that ISO into Virtual Box. Click on Start from the menu panel and you would see the GRUB screen. Select Try or Install Ubuntu.
Select Language, Accessibility options, your preferred keyboard layout and Use wired connection in next 4 steps. If you are connected to WiFi on your base OS, VM treats it as a wired connection so don’t worry about it. You will get 2 options in the next scree – Install Ubuntu or Try Ubuntu. If you just want to try it, go for the second option, but since we are trying to Install Ubuntu 24.10 in Virtual Box, select the first option and click on Next.
On the next screen, go for Interactive installation. The other option is only useful for advance users which we will cover in some other article.
In the next screen, create an account which you would use to login and for root user. Click on Next.
Select your timezone in the next step, review your settings / preferences and click on Install.
It will take somewhere between 30 to 60 minutes for the installation to complete. Once it’s completed, you would get the option to Continue testing or Restart your system.
Choose Restart now and your VM will reboot and show your login option.
Once logged in, you have a fully function Ubuntu 24.10 system. Play around it, use it, do whatever you want with it. It will be fun.
