The team at UbuntuDDE announced the first stable release of UbuntuDDE 20.04 LTS. It’s more than a month since the beta was launched and as much as 50k+ people have already tried it.

UbuntuDDE 20.04 LTS is a remix of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa with Deepin Desktop Environment 5.0. The fact that it brings up the stability of Ubuntu coupled with one of the best desktop environment makes it exciting. Deepin desktop is an elegant, beautiful desktop environment and has gathered a lot of popularity lately.

UbuntuDDE 20.04 LTS is based on Focal Fossa release and built on top of Linux Kernel 5.4. It uses the Ubuntu Software Center instead of Deepin but comes pre-installed with the Deepin Stock software.

The recommended system requirement is a 2GHZ processor, 4GB of RAM and around 30GB of free space. It’s certainly not a lightweight Linux distribution and Deepin is heavy with its animations!

I grabbed a copy from its download page to set it up in a VirtualBox first.

The Mega Link was the best option if you stay from Torrent. I have earlier tried Deepin Desktop Environment in Ubuntu but it came through a third party PPA which is neither supported by Ubuntu nor Deepin. A third-party PPAs can break your system and conflict with other part of your existing desktop environment.

Some of us try to stay away from these PPAs and would rather prefer installing from source code directly. UbuntuDDE fixes this problem, supports the release for an awesome 5 years and promises to improve in coming days.

Couple of caveats – It’s not an official Ubuntu flavor (yet!) and could have bugs.

Distro hoppers – what do you think about Ubuntu DDE 20.04? Did you manage to try it out in it’s Beta release or was waiting for the stable one? Let me know in the comments section!

I will leave the review for a different post some other day!
